  • I am currently working as a senior registrar (Speciality trainee in Diabetes and Endocrinology) at the Diabetes and Endocrinology unit, under the supervision of Consultant Endocrinologists Dr Charles Antonypillai, MBBS, MD, FRCP (UK) and Dr.Sonali Gunathilake, MBBS, MD, MRCP(UK).
  • Endocrine and Diabetes clinics are been conducted every day which provide comprehensive services to more than 10,000 patients per month, where I see all new patients with diabetes and endocrine problems, inward diabetic and endocrine referrals and patients on long term clinic follow up with clinic for diabetes, gestational diabetes, thyroid diseases, pituitary and other endocrine diseases.
  • There are specialized diabetic foot clinics, and obesity clinics.
  • My key responsibilities are: Conduct outpatient diabetes, general endocrine clinics and specialized clinics for type 1 diabetes mellitus, gestational diabetes, thyroid disorders, pituitary disorders and obesity clinics.
  • Involve in the management of inward patients with diabetes and endocrinological problems including diabetic and endocrinological emergencies with oncall responsibilities.
  • Perform dynamic endocrine function tests in the day unit attached to the Endocrine unit and to co-ordinate many endocrine related interventional radiological procedures.
  • Involve in the management of preoperative and post-operative patients with pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal problems and bariatric surgeries.
  • I also involved in the perioperative care of patients with diabetes mellitus who are undergoing complicated surgeries.
  • Organizing and co-ordinating monthly endocrine-Radiology meetings, Endo-histo-chem path meetings, multidisciplinary team discussions, weekly case discussions on both inward and clinic patients with diabetes and endocrine diseases and bariatric MDMs for Obese patients.
  • Organizing and conducting teaching programs for undergraduate and postgraduate students, medical officers and nursing officers in the hospital.
  • Involve as a team member in the diabetes and endocrine unit, in research projects and audits.
  • We had regular journal discussions and various academic programs at the unit which helped me in building up my knowledge in Endocrinology.
  • During our post MD training program, we had monthly trainee day programs which included journal club presentations, case discussions and monthly viva conducted by a team of trainers, Consultant Endocrinologists, which covered almost all the areas in endocrinology.
  • The National Hospital Kandy, Sri Lanka is the second largest tertiary care hospital in the country. It caters for around 6000 –8000 patients draining from 3 main districts of central province of Sri Lanka per month. Website: N/A
